Part I – Peter falando sobre si mesmo.

Vamos conhecer um pouco sobre Peter Freestone (na foto ao lado com a banda em um intervalo da turnê no México), o cozinheiro, o assistente, o amigo.

1 - Muitos fãs não sabem como você começou a trabalhar com o Freddie. Você pode nos contar?

Em 1979 eu estava trabalhando para o Royal Ballet, na Royal Opera House em Londres. Freddie Mercury era um convidado especial numa festa de caridade com o Royal Ballet. Ele tocou ‘Crazy Little Thing Called’ Love e ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ com os dançarinos. Depois da festa nós nos conhecemos e ele me perguntou no que eu trabalhava. Eu disse que eu trabalhava com as roupas da companhia de ballet. Três semanas depois eu recebi uma ligação da administração do Queen, perguntando se eu poderia trabalhar com o Queen, cuidando de suas roupas para a Crazy Tour na Inglaterra.

2 – Qual é a a sensação de estar lado a lado com uma estrela, uma celebridade, todos os dias? O que é bom e o que é ruim?

Quando você está trabalhando, é só o trabalho. Não tem muita diferença se é uma celebridade ou o diretor de uma empresa. Estar com um amigo tira muito do stress de trabalhar 24 horas por dia. É 24 horas por dia, 365 dias por ano, mas você vê o mundo inteiro.

3 – Como e quando você começou a ser não só assistente de Freddie, mas também um amigo?

A amizade começou no dia que eu comecei a trabalhar com ele em Novembro de 1979, e o trabalho de assistente começou em 1980.

4 - Sobre Montreux: Quando foi a primeira vez que você esteve na cidade? Qual foi a sensação?

A primeira vez que eu estive em Montreux foi em 1981. Foi como realizar um sonho. Nessa época, a suíça era um desses lugares que você nunca imaginou ir, como o Brasil!

5 – Como surgiu a idéia da Bavarian Tour? Conte-nos um pouco sobre esse ‘dia inesquecível’

Com o tempo, muito da história da música desaparceu de Montreux. O restaurante Bavaria, onde o Queen geralmente comia durante a gravação em Montreux foi destruído no começo de 2008. Por isso arranjar essa turnê para dar a alguns fãs uma última chance de visitar esse lugar, combinando isso com a chance de comer alguns tipos de comida que eu cozinhava para o Freddie em casa. Incluído, havia um passeio de barco para ver a ‘Duck House’ e ver o apartamento que freddie possuía. Também uma visita ao Montreux Palace Hotel, que Freddie e eu também considerávamos como um lar, duranta algumas visitas aqui.

6 – Peter, você já escreveu dois livros sobre o Freddie, estou certa? Conte-nos sobre eles, como veio a idéia e se há alguma intenção de traduzi-los para outras línguas.

A intenção do primeiro nunca foi virar um livro. Foi o resultado de três anos de terapia para mim, conversando com David Evans sobre o Freddie. Depois de muito perguntar, nós gastamos 6 meses colocando palavras aleatórias numa certa ordem e o primeiro livro foi publicado. O segundo foi apenas para mostrar o que aconteceu com Freddie desde que ele morreu e quanto interesse ainda há sobre ele e sua carreira musical. Eu fico feliz em dizer que o primeiro livro já está publicado em inglês, japonês, russo, italiano e húngaro. É só uma editora de qualquer país se aproximar da Music Sales, na Grã Bretanha, selecionar uma tradução e negociar a publicação

7– Nós sabemos que você está supervisionando uma banda cover australiana chamada ‘It’s a kinda magic’. Conte-nos sobre ela e se ela tem interesse de tocar da América Latina.

Eles são uma banda muito boa, que dá a impressão de que você assistiu a um show do Queen, com o freddie no holofote. Eles já tocaram em vários lugares pelo mundo. 8– Depois da morte do Freddie, há alguns rumores de que você teria se tornado HIV positivo, após uma visita a um hospital. Como você encarou isso? Como é sentir o preconceito rodeando você?

Os rumores começaram quando um jornal britanoco reportou uma mentira, que eu era um dos amantes de Freddie. Isso fez com que as pessoas pensassem que se eu tivesse dormido com o Freddie, ele deveria ter me passado AIDS. Como eu já disse várias vezes, nós NÃO éramos amantes!

9 – Você tem contado com os outros membros da banda hoje em dia? Com a família do Freddie? Com o Jim? Com a Mary?

Nós nos contactamos ocasionalmente.

10– Você sabe o que aconteceu com os gatos de Freddie?

Oscar fugiu. Tiffany já havia morrido antes de Freddie. Dalilah, Goliath e Miko ficaram no Garden Lodge. Lares bons foram encontrados para Romeo e Lily.

11– Você concorda com Mary, ao pintar as paredes do Garden Lodge?

A Mary não tinha outra escolha. Os vizinhos reclamaram para o consulado de Kensington que a rua parecia muito suja e que o valor de suas propriedades estava caindo.

12– O que você acha da nova formação do Queen + Paul Rodgers? O Queen é Queen sem o Freddie para você?

Brian e Roger são músicos. Freddie passou muito tempo dando a eles algo com que trabalhar depois que ele se fosse. Ele não queria que eles parassem só porque ele não estaria mais lá. Demorou bastante tempo pata eles encontrarem algo com que eles pudessem trabalhar. Eu estou ansioso para o próximo trabalho que eles fizeram.

13– Peter, 16 anos sem Freddie. Do que você mais sente falta daqueles dias que você esteve com ele?Peter, 16 years without Freddie.

Eu sinto falta do melhor amigo que eu tive até hoje!

14– O Freddie era muito diferente em casa e quando ele saía em publico?

Havia dois Freddie Mercurys! Em público ele era o grande showman, o superstar. Em casa ele esa quieto, tinha tempo para pensar e passava o tempo com seus amigos e gatos.

15– Sobre Freddie em Montreux, o que é melhor lembrado?

Como tudo com o Freddie, tem vááriias coisas, mas tem uma sim: Under Pressure.

16– durante nosso encontro em Montreux, a propósito, na frente do Mountain studios, você me contou a história da gravação de Under Pressute. Você pode nos contar?

O Queen estava trabalhando no studio, quando David Bowie apareceu. Eles começaram a ‘brincar’ e uma musica começou a aparecer. A banda saiu para comer alguma coisa, deixando Bowie e David Richards, o produtor, no estúdio para continuar. Depois de um tempinho, a banda voltou e gostou do que os dois Davids tinham feito. Eles continuaram por um bom tempo e depois de umas 18 horas ‘Under Pressure’ estava quase pronta. Dois dias depois, Freddie e David Bowie terminaram o trabalho em Nova Iorque

17 - Freddie x John x Brian x Roger… Queen… qual era a verdadeira relação entre eles? Profissionalismo ou amizade? O que Freddie pensava de cada membro?

Para trabalhar junto como eles fizeram por mais de 20 anos, tem que haver uma forte amizade. Eles também eram as pessoas mais profissionais que eu já conheci. Como em qualquer relacionamento, às vezes tem uma tensão, mas isso é típico de uma relação que funciona.

18 – Houve alguns rumores sobre um caso de Freddie com Roger…

Esta é a primeira vez que eu ouço isso! Estou certo de que NUNCA houve nenhuma relação sexual entre eles!

19– Como e quando Freddie te contou que era HIV positivo?

Freddie me contou no verão de 1987. Foi na cozinha e ele veio e me contou. Ele disse também que era um assunto que não era para ser mais comentado.

20 – Porque ele não usou sua imagem pública para ser um exemplo na luta contra a AIDS?

Freddie passou 4 anos de sua vida protegendo as pessoas com quem ele se preocupava, sua família, seus amigos, de constantes curiosos da imprensa, que seria o que teria acontecido se ele tivesse feito seu testamento mais cedo. Eu, pessoalmente, sei disso por causa do que aconteceu no sábado, do lado de fora do garden lodge, quando eu fui seguido rua abaixo pelos jornalistas.

21– Para mim, ter sido reconhecida por você em Montreux foi algo que me agradou muito. O que você mais se lembra do que aconteceu aqui no Brasil? O que o Freddie achou de nosso país?

Eu me lembro dos shows e da grande festta no hotel. O Freddie achou as pessoas brasileiras muito amigáveis e eu me lembro que um dia a gente saiu para fazer compras e estávamos corcados de guarda-costas. A gente foi numa lojinha onde só um ou dois dos seguranças puderam entrar. As pessoas da loja, tanto vendedores como clientes, foram muito legais com o Freddie.

22– As pessoas dizem que no Rock in rio, o Freddie destruiu seu camarim, e Jim, em seu livro, diz que ele voltou meio triste, de mau humor, do Rock in rio. O que você se lembra disso?

Freddie geralmente destruía seu camarim se algumas coisas técnicas saíam errado, ou até mesmo se ele sentisse que ele não tinha dado um bom show! Eu não posso te dar muitos detalhes desse show, porque eu não me lembro direito.

23 – Voltando à doença: como foi a luta dele contra a AIDS? E seus últimos dias?...

Como qualquer um que sofre com essa doença, é uma luta difícil. Ele aceitou o fato de que ele tinha menos tempo para viver e decidiu que iria passar o resto de seu tempo criando música. A musica era sua vida e eu acredito que isso foi o que manteve ele nesses anos extras. Nos últimos dias ele aceitou o que estava acontecendo e os passou com amigos bem próximos e família.

25 - O que preocupava ou irritava Freddie, como uma pessoa?

Freddie estava sempre preocupado com dar o melhor dele em sua música. Queria criar o melhor que pudesse e fazer a performance o melhor possível também. Ele era um perfeccionista e sofria todos os tormentos de um.

Freddie was always concerned that he gave his best with his music. That he created the best he could and performed it to the best of his ability. He was a perfectionist and suffered all the tribulations of one.

26 -Como se lembra de Freddie?

27 - Peter, defina Freddie para nós

As duas perguntas podem ser respondidas em uma só! Para mim, Freddie Mercury era o mais gentil, o mais generoso e o amigo mais fiel que eu já tivera até então. Ele me ensinou sobre a vida, o amor, a arte e a verdadeiro apreço pela amizade que eu pude carregar comigo até hoje. O Freddie era um professor da VIDA, com quem todas as pessoas que o conheciam podiam aprender.

3) Many fans don’t know how you began working to Freddie. Can you tell us?

In 1979 I was working for the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in London. Freddie Mercury was a special guest at a charity gala with the Royal Ballet. He performed ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the dancers. At the party afterwards we met and he asked me what work I did. I said I worked with the costumes for the ballet company. Three weeks later I received a call from the Queen management asking if I would work for Queen looking after their costumes for the Crazy Tour of England.

4) What is the sensation of being side by side with a star, a celebrity, everyday? What is good and what is bad?

When you are working, it is work, There is not a lot of difference if it is for a star or a director of a company. Being with a friend takes away a lot of the stress of a 24 hour each day job. It is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but you get to see the whole world.

5) How and when did you start being not only Freddie’s assistant, but also friend?

The friendship started the day I started work in November 1979, and the assistant job started in 1980.

6) About Montreux: When was the 1st time you’ve been in the City? How was that (sensation)?

I was first in Montreux in 1981. It was almost a dream come true. In those days Switzerland was one of those places that you never thought you would come to, like Brazil!

7) How came up the Bavarian Tour Idea? Tell usa Little about this ‘unforgettable Day.’

Over time much music history has disappeared from Montreux. The Bavaria restaurant, where Queen often ate while recording in Montreux was due for demolition early in 2008. Because of this montreuxmusic thought to arrange this tour to give some fans a last chance to visit this place, combining it with a chance to have some of the types of food I cooked for Freddie at home. Included was a boat trip to see the ‘Duck House’ and view the apartment Freddie owned. Also a visit to the Montreux Palace Hotel which Freddie and I also thought of as ‘home’ for a few visits there.

8) Peter, you have already written two books about Freddie, Am I right? Tell US about them, how came up the Idea and if there is intention of translating them to other languages.

The first was never intended to be a book. It was the result of three years therapy for me, talking to David Evans about Freddie. After much asking we spent 6 months putting random words into some sort of order and the first book was published. The second was just to show what has happened to Freddie since he died and how much interest there still is in him and his music all this time later. I am happy to say the first book is already published in English, Japanese, Russian, Italian and Hungarian. It is up to a publisher in any country to approach Music Sales in Britain to sort out any translation and publishing deal.

9) We know that you are supervising an Australian cover band called ‘IT’S A KINDA MAGIC’. Tell us about it, and if it has interest of Playing here in Latin America.

They are a very good band who gives you the impression you have seen Queen performing with Freddie in the spotlight. They have played in venues all over the world. 10) After Freddie’s death, there were rumors that you had turned HIV positive, after a visit to a hospital. How did you face it? How is to feel the bias surrounding you?

The rumours started when a British newspaper reported an untruth, that I was one of Freddie’s lovers. This caused people to think that if I slept with Freddie he must have given me AIDS. As I have often stated, we were NOT lovers!

11) Have you contact with the other band members nowadays? With Freddie’s family? With Jim? With Mary?

We have occasional contact.

12) Do you know what happened to Freddie’s cats?

Oscar left home. Tiffany had died before Freddie. Delilah, Goliath and Miko stayed at Garden Lodge. Good homes were found for Romeo and Lily.

13) Do you agree with Mary painting the walls of Garden Lodge?

Mary had very little choice. Neighbours complained to Kensington Council that the street looked very untidy and that the value of their property was going down.

14) What do you think of the new ‘Queen + Paul Rodgers’ band? Is Queen Queen without Freddie for you?

Brian and Roger are musicians. Freddie spent much time giving them something to work with when he was gone. He didn’t want them to stop just because he wasn’t there. It took them a long time to find someone they felt they could work with. I am looking forward to the new work they have done.

15) Peter, 16 years without Freddie. What do you most miss of those days you’ve been with him?

I miss the best friend I had up to that time!

2) Was Freddie too different at home and when he went out (public places etc)?

There were two Freddie Mercurys! In public he was the big showman, the superstar. At home he was quiet, had time to think and spend time with his friends and cats!

3) About Freddie and Montreux, what is most and best remembered? What moments?

As with most things about Freddie there are so many, but here is one, Under Pressure.

4) During our meeting in Montreux, by the way, in front of Mountain Studios, you told the story about the Under Pressure recording. Can you tell us?

Queen was in the studio working, when David Bowie turned up. They started jamming and a song began to appear. The band went off to have something to eat, leaving David Bowie and David Richards, the producer, in the studio to carry on. After a short time the band returned and liked what the two Davids had done. They carried on for a long time and in the end after about 18 hours there was ‘Under Pressure’ nearly completed. Two days later Freddie and David Bowie finished the work in another 24 hour session in New York.

5) Freddie x John x Brian x Roger… Queen… what was the real relationship they had? Professionalism or friendship? What Freddie used to think about each band member?

To work together like they did for over twenty years there had to be a very strong friendship. They were also the most professional people I had met. As in any relationship there is tension from time to time, but that makes for a good working relationship.

6) There have always been rumors about an affair between Freddie and Roger…

This is the first time I have heard this! To my certain knowledge there was NEVER any sexual relationship between them!

7) How and when did Freddie tell you he was HIV positive?

Freddie told me in summer 1987. I was in the kitchen and he came and told me. He also said it was a subject that would not be spoken about again.

8) Why didn’t he use his public image to be an example of the fight against AIDS?

Freddie spent four years of his life protecting the people he cared about, his family and his friends, from constant prying from the press, which is what would have happened if he had made his statement earlier. I have personal knowledge of this because of what happened the Saturday outside Garden Lodge, when I was chased down the street by journalists!

9) For me, being recognized by you in Montreux was something that pleased me a lot. What do you most remember of the events that happened here in Brazil? What Freddie thought of our country?

I remember the shows and also the big party at the hotel. Freddie thought the Brazilian people were very friendly and I remember a time we went out shopping and were surrounded by body guards. We went into a small shop where there were only one or two guards allowed in. The people in the shop, both staff and shoppers, were very kind to Freddie.

10) There are people who say that at Rock’n Rio festival Freddie destroyed his dressing room and Jim, on his Book, says that he came back kind of sad, in a bad mood, from RIR… What do you remember of it?

Freddie often destroyed his dressing room if some technical things went wrong, or even if he felt he had not given a good show! I cannot give you pecific details of this show as I have not a clear memory of it.

11) Back to the disease: How was his fight against AIDS? And his last few days?...

As with anybody suffering with this disease it is a hard fight. He accepted he had less time to live and decided he would spend the time left to him in creating music. Music was his life and I believe it is what kept him going those extra couple of years. In the last days he accepted what was happening and spent it with very close friends and family.

12) What worried or bothered Freddie, as a person?

Freddie was always concerned that he gave his best with his music. That he created the best he could and performed it to the best of his ability. He was a perfectionist and suffered all the tribulations of one.

13) How do you remember Freddie?

14) Peter, define Freddie to us.

The two questions can be answered in one! To me Freddie Mercury was the Kindest, Most Generous and Loyal Friend I had up to that time. He taught me about life, love, art and a true appreciation of friendship that I have been able take with me until now. Freddie was a teacher about LIFE, that all people who knew him were able to learn from.
